Originally Kratos was just a demigod. He opened Pandora's box and gained Hope (the power to kill a god). He killed Ares and was made officially a god by Zeus and Athena in GOW. In GOW2 he loses all his godly powers (but not Hope) when he touches the blade of olympus and turns back to his former self (demigod).

However, one aspect of the previous games that makes its return is arguably the deepest connection Kratos has to his previous godly excursions.
